I have reviewed a lot of phones over the years. Most of them follow the same formula: bump up the processor, improve the camera slightly, change the design a little, and call it new. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra does not follow that formula.

This phone carries a 200MP telephoto that physically shifts focal lengths like a real camera lens. The main sensor is a 1-inch chip with LOFIC technology, the same sensor size category that Sony uses in professional compact cameras. On top of that, Xiaomi added triple IP certification including IP69, a 6000mAh silicon-carbon battery, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The India price sits at ₹1,39,999.

I want to answer one question in this Xiaomi 17 Ultra review: does this phone actually do what Xiaomi claims, and is the price justified for an Indian buyer? I also cover the standard Xiaomi 17 so you can compare both and decide which one makes sense for you.

Xiaomi 17 Ultra

Xiaomi sells the Ultra in a single variant: 16GB RAM with 512GB storage at ₹1,39,999.

Pay with an SBI credit or debit card and you get ₹10,000 off instantly, which brings the price down to ₹1,29,999. On a phone this expensive, that saving is worth planning for.

What you get with the Ultra:

  • Photography Kit Pro worth ₹19,999 free (early bird offer)

The Photography Kit Pro clips onto the phone and adds a physical zoom lever, a two-stage shutter button, and a dedicated video trigger. It transforms the Ultra into something that actually feels like a camera in your hands.

Colours available in India: Black and White. The Leica Edition stays exclusive to China.

Design and Build

Xiaomi clearly heard the feedback on the 15 Ultra. That phone had a circular camera island so large it covered nearly half the back panel. On the 17 Ultra, they replaced it with a flatter, rectangular module placed higher up. The result looks far more mature. It stopped trying to look like a Leica camera and started looking like a serious phone.

The body sits at 8.29mm thick, making it the slimmest Ultra Xiaomi has shipped so far. Fitting a 6000mAh battery inside that profile is genuinely impressive engineering. The micro-curved aluminum frame feels sturdy without any uncomfortable edges, and the Starlit Green variant has a mineral grain texture that gives you natural grip without looking loud.

Build highlights worth noting:

  • Shield Glass 3.0 front protection
  • Micro-curved aluminum alloy frame
  • IP66 + IP68 + IP69 triple certification
  • 8.29mm slim body despite a 6000mAh battery inside

One thing that stands out against rivals: the IP69 certification means the phone handles high-pressure water jets. Neither the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra nor the iPhone 17 Pro Max offers this. If you live in Mumbai, Kolkata, or any city with heavy monsoons, that extra certification is not just a spec flex. It actually matters.

The standard Xiaomi 17 at 6.3 inches is much more manageable. It sits comfortably in one hand and weighs noticeably less. If you find large phones frustrating to use all day, the Xiaomi 17 is the easier pick physically.

Display

The 6.9-inch HyperRGB OLED panel on the Ultra peaks at 3500 nits. Reading the screen in direct afternoon sunlight is genuinely comfortable. The LTPO refresh rate shifts automatically between 1Hz and 120Hz depending on what is happening on screen, keeping things smooth during gaming and saving battery while you read.

Xiaomi went with 1.5K resolution instead of full 2K. My honest take is that you will not notice it during daily use. What you might actually notice is the 1920Hz high-frequency PWM dimming. Most phones at this price tier use 240Hz or 480Hz dimming, and that lower rate creates a faint flicker that builds eye strain over long sessions. The 17 Ultra removes that problem entirely.

Display specs that matter:

  • 6.9-inch HyperRGB OLED, 1.5K resolution
  • 3500 nits peak brightness for outdoor use
  • 1Hz to 120Hz LTPO adaptive refresh rate
  • 1920Hz PWM dimming for eye comfort
  • HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support

I appreciate that Xiaomi chose eye protection over a spec number here. A 2K label looks better in a comparison chart, but the 1920Hz dimming makes the screen noticeably more comfortable for heavy daily use. That trade-off makes more sense for most Indian buyers than chasing a resolution number.

The Xiaomi 17 hits the same 3500 nits peak on its 6.3-inch panel. Outdoor visibility is equally strong on the smaller phone.

Performance and Gaming

Both phones run on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, built on a 3nm process. Gaming, heavy multitasking, 4K video editing, camera processing, none of it creates any lag on either model.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra runs with 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB UFS 4.1 storage. The Xiaomi 17 starts at 12GB RAM. In normal everyday use you genuinely will not feel that gap. The only time that extra 4GB matters is when you keep 15 or more apps open simultaneously or push on-device AI features hard.

Here is something most reviews gloss over: Xiaomi fitted the Ultra with a 3D Dual-Channel IceLoop cooling system that runs 50% more efficiently than the previous generation. When you play BGMI or Genshin Impact for an hour straight, the processor holds its peak speeds instead of throttling from heat. In an Indian summer, sustained thermal performance is a real deciding factor.

Performance specs at a glance:

  • Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, 3nm process
  • 16GB LPDDR5X RAM (Ultra) / 12GB RAM (Xiaomi 17)
  • 512GB UFS 4.1 storage (Ultra)
  • 3D Dual-Channel IceLoop cooling (Ultra only)
  • HyperOS 3 on Android 16 with 5 years of updates

Camera

This is where the ₹50,000 difference between the two phones actually lives.

The main camera uses a 50MP 1-inch Light Fusion 1050L sensor with an f/1.67 aperture. Sony puts sensors of this physical size into their professional compact cameras. The LOFIC technology inside this sensor solves a problem that bothers every mobile photographer: blown-out highlights. When you shoot a person standing near a bright window, most phone cameras either expose for the person and lose the background or do the opposite. The LOFIC sensor captures both. That is hardware solving the problem, not an AI filter faking it.

Now the telephoto. The 200MP periscope camera physically zooms between 75mm and 100mm as a continuous variable range. You pull the zoom slider and the lens mechanically shifts. No mode switching, no digital quality loss. The Leica APO certification added three custom glass elements inside the lens to eliminate chromatic aberration at the source..

Full camera breakdown:

  • 50MP main: 1-inch Light Fusion 1050L, f/1.67, LOFIC technology
  • 200MP telephoto: variable 75-100mm optical zoom, Leica APO certified
  • 50MP ultra-wide: 115 degree FOV, super macro down to 5cm
  • 50MP selfie: supports 8K video recording
  • 4K video at 120FPS with Log format for professional colour grading

The Xiaomi 17 also has a flash that doubles as a heart rate sensor, which no competing Android at this price includes.

Every year someone releases a phone with an impressive camera spec that turns out to be mostly marketing. The variable optical zoom telephoto on the 17 Ultra is not that. It is a genuinely different way to shoot at distance, and the focal length flexibility it gives you is not something you can replicate with a fixed telephoto, no matter how many megapixels it has.

Battery and Charging

Nobody expects the cheaper phone in a lineup to have a bigger battery. The Xiaomi 17 does.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra carries 6000mAh with 90W wired charging. The standard Xiaomi 17 carries 6330mAh with 100W wired charging. Both support 50W wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. The Ultra gives up some battery room because that 1-inch camera module physically takes up internal space. That is the honest trade-off Xiaomi made.

Both phones use silicon-carbon battery chemistry, which packs more energy into a smaller physical cell than traditional lithium-ion. Without this, fitting 6000mAh into an 8.29mm body would simply not be possible.

Both phones get 5 years of major Android OS updates in India

Does the Xiaomi 17 Ultra support 5G in India?

Yes. Both phones support dual 5G SA/NSA bands and work on Jio 5G and Airtel 5G. Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC, and NavIC navigation are also included.

.

Final Verdict

After going through every spec, every feature, and every trade-off, one thing is clear: the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is built for one type of buyer, someone who takes mobile photography seriously.

The 200MP variable zoom Leica APO telephoto does something no other flagship in this price range does. The 1-inch LOFIC main sensor gives you dynamic range that competitors simply cannot match in hardware. The triple IP69 certification makes it the most durable flagship in this comparison. And 90W fast charging on a 6000mAh silicon-carbon battery in an 8.29mm thin body is an engineering achievement worth recognising.

If you want the best Android camera phone available in India right now, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is that phone.
